15 Years

One of my favorite people turned 15 today.

Tate with cake

I remember the moment when he took his first breath of air. A moment frozen in my mind’s eye. A carefully planned videography was sure to accompany this once in a lifetime moment. However, that was not meant to be. I had laid the camera on the chair by the window in the hospital and had forgotten to grab it when “the moment” was about to happen. Just a few seconds after his delivery someone said to me that I should get the camera. I started to move but then stopped myself. I quickly realized that by the time I got the gear powered up and focused, the moment would be history.

So, I remember thinking at that moment to remember it as it was. And not miss it. So, that is how it went down. Not on film, but forever burned in my memory.

This favored person is Tate and he has a love of birds. Since this blog is dedicated to marking events on film (and since the birth photo never happened), I am featuring a photo that Tate took of one of his bird subjects.

The photo at the header of this post was taken by Tate in Wyoming on a family vacation two summers ago. The lightly-perched bird silhouettes grab my attention every time.

And so did Tate, fifteen years ago. And counting.
